Elective & Away Rotations

Attendance sheets

All Interns and Residents

How to Schedule all Elective Rotations:

  1. Review the ELECTIVE SPREADSHEET (AY 2025-2026) to check which electives are available when.

  2. When you find one you are interested in, EMAIL the contact listed on the spreadsheet to request placement and confirm availability. This must be done NO LATER THAN one month in advance (or earlier if noted in the spreadsheet).

  3. EMAIL the chief residents the confirmation of the rotation so the elective spreadsheet can be updated. This may be via screenshot or forwarding the email itself.

  4. Verify that within 48 hours of notifying the chiefs, your rotation is now reserved on the spreadsheet.

Please note that availability and contacts are updated on a regular basis - if you are not hearing back from someone within a timely manner, please reach out to the chief residents to request help.

Additional Steps to Arrange Away Rotations:

  1. Fill out the OFFSITE ROTATION FORM.

  2. Compose a document outlining your Goals & Objectives. This must be created in ACGME format including all core competencies.  An example of one for a clinical rotation can be referenced HERE. Please do not use AI generated Goals & Objectives - this must be your original work.

  3. Have the forms signed by your preceptor.

  4. Have the forms signed by the chief residents.

  5. Bring the forms to Miss Ikia Means or Miss Carolyn Dallas (Hoffberger Building). They will help obtain Program Director signature if approved.

  6. Lastly, the forms must be submitted to GME (only after all above signatures completed) at least 3 months prior to the rotation start date if within the US and at least 6 months prior to the rotation start date if international!

  7. Follow up with Miss Ikia Means or Miss Carolyn Dallas regarding any additional paperwork that may arise related to ECFMG, insurance, etc. Any and all paperwork and requirements are ultimately the responsibility of the resident.

*Any rotation that is outside of Sinai Hospital and its affiliated clinics is considered an “Away rotation.” They may be domestic [i.e within the United States] or international.

*Away rotations may only be taken during the designated time periods as seen on Amion, up to maximum 4 weeks per academic year.

*If an away rotation is in Maryland or in the DC Area, categorical residents must still attend sessions at Sinai Community Care.

Additional Steps to Arrange Research Rotations:

  1. Prior to selecting a research elective, calculate your ambulatory points to date to be sure that you will meet all graduation requirements if not opting for an ambulatory elective. If you will be abble to accommodate this, then proceed to step 2.

  2. Obtain confirmation from a preceptor that you would be interested to work with.

  3. Compose a document outlining your Goals & Objectives. This must be created in ACGME format including all core competencies.  An example of one for a research elective can be referenced HERE. Please do not use AI generated Goals & Objectives - this must be your original work.

  4. Bring the form to the chiefs, then Miss Ikia Means or Miss Caroylyn Dallas for Program Director signature.

  5. The form must be submitted to GME (only after all above signatures completed) at least 1 month prior to the rotation start date (or earlier if away research elective, timelines as above).
