Who Responds?
When an inpatient Code Blue is called, MAO and the ICU team will respond. ICU Charge Nurse, respiratory therapy, and technicians will also respond. The MAO or the ICU Resident [who ever gets there first] is responsible for starting to run the Code Blue. Once the ICU arrives, the ICU resident will take over running the code, interns will assist with compressions, calling family, etc., and the patient’s care will be transitioned to the ICU team. The individual running the Code Blue is responsible for documenting the Code Blue in Cerner.
Important information to document:
What time did the Code Blue start?
What was the initial rhythm? Subsequent rhythms?
What medications were given?
Was the patient intubated?
What was the name of the anesthesiologist who intubated the patient?
Was ROSC achieved? And if so, what time?
If an IO is placed during the Code Blue, the individual who placed the IO is responsible for documenting the procedure note.
