Back-Up Support System
Also known as the Jeopardy System
Provided to all internal medicine residents when unexpected circumstances create situations in which a resident is unable to provide patient care.
In case of unexpected need for urgent or emergent coverage, a resident can reach out to the on-call chief resident or program director (as listed on Amion), who will reassign resident responsibilities to a designated jeopardy resident.
The Jeopardy System is divided amongst all residents from PGY1 to PGY3 as a backup support system for residents in need.
(J1) is designated as first-line jeopardy. Residents assigned (J1) as designated on Amion must be ready and available for clinical duties within 60 minutes of being called.
(J2) is designated as back up jeopardy. Residents assigned (J2) as designated on Amion must be ready and available for clinical duties within 24 hours of being called. (J2) may be activated if (J1) coverage has been exhausted or in alternative circumstances, at the program director's discretion.
Points are designated for each clinical shift that carry forward between academic years and are earned by a resident coming in for a shift while on (J1) or (J2)
All PGY1 residents start with 0 points at the beginning of the academic year.
The higher number of points, the lower a resident is on the list of available jeopardy residents to be called in.
Failure for a resident to appear for clinical duties while designated either (J1) or (J2) is a professionalism violation. If a resident assigned (J1) or (J2) is unable to fulfil clinical duties, the missed clinical shift will be deducted from the resident’s bank of days.
If residents arrange (J1) or (J2) coverage that is predetermined and approved by program leadership, the covering resident is positioned for Jeopardy based off the assigned (J1) or (J2) resident's points.
Based off use of the back-up support system, the Jeopardy system is subject to be changed or modified at any time, at the discretion of the program director.
